Given that the locals call it "Finn McCool's Hurling Stone" I think that a wiser guess might be that it was left there by the mighty man of Ulster!

TOUR IN A MINER
After the good news in Chile more bad news as it looked like I was going to have to face a whole heap of slag - ging if Sundays beginners spin failed to strike a rich seam and actually see the Motte Stone. An off road solo summit by Touring Secretary and an untimely grouping with Bray meant that we didn't actually visit the Motte Stone. After a longer than remembered ascent to top of the hill above old mine workings no one was too bothered but even Dave didn't lose his shirt.
The miner beginners group of the Treasurer, David and myself met at Ashford and managed to drill their way successfully to the summit and find the Motte Stone in the same location that it had been deposited by a retreating glacier several thousands years ago.Surfacing on top to a very bright sun and the verdant foilage in the valley turning colour there can't be many better views in the whole of Wicklow.
Both the Treasurer and David managed to up their production levels for the day and both emerged from their shift with new levels of mileage peviously unseen. Well done to both. For pig irons sake they even made me buy the coffee to mark this occasion. A good day to be above ground with the added bonus of David being home in time to carboload on daughters birhtday cake ready for his next shift.
